Chontales is a department of marked and beautiful contrasts and a land celebrated for “gates” and singers. “Where the rivers are made of milk and the curdled stones”, is an allusion to his rich and centuries-old livestock tradition.

The phrase: “Chontales is beautiful” is not far from reality. Its intricate geography runs between four defined climatological areas: the zigzagging coastal zone in Lake Cocibolca (90 km), the wide plains that make up the horizon and where the old cattle ranches were established; the portentous Sierra de Amerrique and the beginning of the vast plateau of the Caribbean.
